Must be aged 18 or older to obtain a license for a semi medium-size vehicle, regular vehicle,large motorcycle, large special vehicle or towing vehicle. Must be aged 20 or older to obtain license for a medium-size vehicle. Must be aged 21 or older to obtain license for a large-size vehicle.

A Valid foreign driver's license and any expired license if you have one

If you have an old license, please bring your old license.
*If your foreign driver’s license does not contain the date you first obtained it, a document, such as your driving record with the said date, is required. *If you have multiple licenses (e.g. an ordinary motor vehicle license and an ordinary motorcycle license), a document indicating the date you first obtained these licenses maybe required respectively. *Required documents may vary depending on the country or license status. Japanese translation of the foreign driver's license

The translation must either be done by the embassy or consulate representing the country where the license was issued or the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).

A document which proves that you had stayed in the country or region where you obtained the license for a total of three months or more since you obtained it (e.g. passport)

*Please bring all of your passports, including expired ones.
*If you used the automated passport control at the immigration, please bring along a certificate issued to prove the aforesaid fact that you stay for the required period in the country or region where you obtained the license.
*The immigration record may be necessary even if your passport has not passed through the automated gate.

(Note 1) If you have renewed your passport, you will also need your old passport to check the length of stay in the country where you have a foreign license.
(Note 2) If your passport is not stamped (including when using an automated gate), You may need to provide proof of your stay. (If necessary, Certificate of entry issued by Immigration Control Bureau.)

Medium-sized/large-sized motor vehicle license:0.8 or better (both eyes) and 0.5 or better (each eye). The applicant must go through depth perception tests by the three-rod method three times and the average error must be 2 cm or less.

Interpreter/Translator
Your interview is conducted in Japanese only. If you have problems with the language,make sure to be accompanied by an interpreter.

Your interpreter will be asked to identify himself with ID documents, such as drivers license, health insurance card, mynumber card, passport, student ID. Notification card accompanying mynumber card is not acceptable, in principle.

Application Process
Proof of Stay in Foreign Country
The duration of your stay in the foreign country where your license was issued must have been three months (90 days) or longer. This means that you must have stayed in the country where the license was issued for a total of three months (90 days) or more to be considered as valid. (Example) If you have acquired a license from 2012 and stayed in the issuing country until 2014

Please bring all your old passports.
If you use an automated gate when entering or leaving Japan, please obtain an immigration record certificate for the country where you have obtained your license.
Passports that do not use an automated gate may require an immigration certificate.

This means that you must have stayed in the country where the license was issued for a total of three months (90 days) or more to be considered as valid. If you use an automated gate when entering or leaving Japan, please obtain an immigration record certificate for the country where you have obtained your license.

Japanese translation of the foreign driver's license

The translation must either be done by the embassy or consulate representing the country where the license was issued or the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).

A document which proves that you had stayed in the country or region where you obtained the license for a total of three months or more since you obtained it (e.g. passport)

*Please bring all of your passports, including expired ones.
